Spanish teenager Rafael Jodar started his Wimbledon 2026 journey impressively by defeating British wildcard Felix Gill 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 in his first tour-level grass match. Despite his limited experience, the 19-year-old showcased adaptability, breaking Gill five times out of 11 chances and winning 84 percent of points on his first serve, wrapping up the match in under two hours.
Reflecting on his performance, Jodar recognized the unique challenges of playing on grass but expressed satisfaction with his handling of the match. He emphasized the need for attention to detail on this surface, noting the fast-paced nature of the game and the difficulty of recovering from a poorly served game. Jodar felt content with his performance in managing these situations effectively.
This victory against Gill marked a significant milestone for Jodar, securing his first win against the World No. 220 player and etching his name in Spanish tennis history. He became the sixth Spanish teenager in the Open Era to win a men’s singles main-draw match at Wimbledon, joining a prestigious list that includes Jose Moreno Tallada, Sergi Bruguera, Tommy Robredo, Rafael Nadal, and Carlos Alcaraz.
Jodar, seeded 23rd, arrived at Wimbledon following a breakthrough season, including his first ATP Tour title in Marrakech and notable performances in ATP Masters 1000 events in Madrid and Rome. Additionally, he reached his first Grand Slam quarter-final at Roland Garros earlier this year. In the upcoming round, Jodar is set to face compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta, setting the stage for a rematch of their thrilling encounter at Roland Garros, where Jodar staged a remarkable comeback from two sets down to emerge victorious.
