Sri Lanka ‘A’ cricketer Nuwanidu Fernando views the upcoming 50-over tri-series against India ‘A’ and Afghanistan ‘A’ as a crucial chance to solidify his position and strive for a regular spot in the national team. The tri-series kicks off at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium, with Sri Lanka ‘A’ facing India ‘A’ led by Tilak Varma.

Fernando expressed his determination to maintain his good form from recent times throughout the tri-series. He considers the matches against India ‘A’ and Afghanistan ‘A’ as significant opportunities to showcase his skills and progress towards his goal of consistent national team selection. In an exclusive interview, he emphasized the importance of excelling in these contests.

The younger brother of Sri Lanka bowler Vishwa Fernando, Nuwanidu credited his sibling as a major influence and support in his cricketing journey. He highlighted Vishwa’s guidance on handling pressure and adapting to different situations, acknowledging his brother’s pivotal role in his cricket career development. Nuwanidu attributed his entry into cricket to Vishwa’s inspiration and support.

Fernando anticipates challenging playing conditions in Dambulla, expecting uneven bounce, some turn, and potential weather impacts. He plans to assess the pitch conditions on match day and adjust his playing style accordingly. Reflecting on his recent performance in the ‘A’ series against New Zealand, where he scored 126 runs in three innings, Fernando aims to build on that success in the upcoming tri-series.

With experience in six ODIs and three T20Is for Sri Lanka, totaling 102 runs, Fernando is eager to make a mark in the tri-series and focus on his future performances. He emphasized the need to maintain his current form and strive for consistent high-level play to secure his place in the national team. Fernando highlighted his technical advantage in playing against both pacers and spinners due to his height, enabling him to reach the ball effectively and adapt to different bowling styles.

Taking a methodical approach, Fernando emphasized his focus on performing well in each series and tour. He aims to excel in the upcoming tri-series as a step towards regaining a spot in the national team, highlighting his commitment to continuous improvement and success in his cricketing career.
