Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath praised the visit of Indian External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar to Colombo, emphasizing the strong bond between the two nations. He expressed gratitude for India’s assistance in overcoming economic challenges, particularly during adverse weather conditions caused by Cyclone Ditwah. Herath highlighted the multi-dimensional relationship between Sri Lanka and India, citing geographical proximity, historical ties, shared values, and expanding economic cooperation.
During a joint press statement with EAM Jaishankar, Herath thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian government for their invaluable support. He acknowledged India’s assistance, including a $4 billion credit line, petroleum swaps, and debt restructuring aid. Herath also mentioned India’s recent relief efforts after Cyclone Ditwah, such as providing relief material, healthcare services, and urgent medicines.
The Foreign Minister welcomed Jaishankar’s announcement of a new relief package to aid Sri Lanka’s recovery efforts. He described India’s gesture as a demonstration of enduring friendship and solidarity, emphasizing the significance of the visit in supporting Sri Lanka’s rebuilding process. Herath reiterated the importance of India’s continuous support in stabilizing the Sri Lankan economy and expressed appreciation for the ongoing cooperation between the two nations.
