Sri Lanka faced a setback in their T20 World Cup match against Australia when fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana suffered a serious hamstring injury. Pathirana, just 23 years old, had to leave the field during the game at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium after pulling up with discomfort in his left hamstring.
The injury occurred early in Australia’s innings, with Pathirana unable to continue after delivering just four balls. Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka had to complete Pathirana’s over, highlighting the sudden nature and potential severity of the injury.
Australia’s aggressive opening pair, Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head, took advantage of Pathirana’s absence, forming a strong 104-run partnership in just 52 deliveries. Their aggressive play put Sri Lanka under pressure, with Australia scoring 70 runs without loss in the Power-play, setting a strong foundation for their innings.
Sri Lanka’s bowlers, especially the spinners, fought back after the explosive start by Australia. Dushan Hemantha, Dunith Wellalage, and Kamindu Mendis played crucial roles in restricting Australia’s scoring and taking wickets. Despite the setback of Pathirana’s injury, Sri Lanka managed to bowl out Australia for 181 runs in their 20 overs.
