The police in Srinagar district, Jammu and Kashmir, announced a 14-year conviction in a case under the Protection Of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The case involved the kidnapping and sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl, reported in April 2021. Srinagar Police conducted a thorough investigation, leading to the recovery of the victim and the collection of evidence.
After completing the investigation, a charge-sheet was filed before the fast-track court in Srinagar. Following a detailed trial, the accused was found guilty and sentenced to 14 years in prison along with a fine of Rs 15,000. The police reiterated their zero-tolerance policy towards crimes against women and children, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring justice for victims through professional investigations.
The POCSO Act, enacted in 2012, aims to protect minors from sexual abuse, assault, and pornography, with a focus on child-friendly reporting and trial procedures. It mandates swift trials, strict penalties, including the death penalty since 2019, and the establishment of Special Courts to handle such cases. POCSO defines various sexual assault offences on children and ensures gender-neutral application to both boy and girl victims/accused.
