A Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) soldier in Jharkhand’s Chatra district reportedly took his own life by shooting himself with his service weapon. The incident occurred at the Shila OP Picket under the Simaria police station limits where the soldier was on duty. The soldier, identified as Prahlad Kumar Singh from Mahtodih village in Deoghar district, served with the 35th Battalion of the SSB.
Eyewitnesses described how the soldier used his service rifle to end his life, causing shock and concern among security personnel and local police. Following the incident, the Chatra Superintendent of Police and the SSB Commandant visited the scene late at night for assessment. The body was later taken into police custody and sent for a post-mortem examination at Chatra Sadar Hospital.
The reason behind the soldier’s drastic action is still under investigation, with authorities exploring various possibilities including internal issues and mental stress. The soldier’s brother, Rohit Singh, mentioned receiving a call from the battalion informing them of the tragic event. He expressed disbelief as there were no apparent signs of distress during their last conversation.
Prahlad Singh had recently returned from leave and resumed duty just a month before the incident. Family members revealed that he had joined the SSB in 2017, got married in 2018, and leaves behind a wife and young daughter. The community is mourning the loss, with both residents and officials expressing sorrow over the untimely death of the soldier.
