Chief Ministers, Deputy Chief Ministers, and Finance Ministers from various states found the pre-budget consultation meeting with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to be a productive platform to present their states’ financial requirements and development focuses before the Union Budget. During the meeting, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant emphasized state-specific issues and urged the continuation of Central Sector Schemes crucial for Goa’s progress.
Uttar Pradesh Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna shared that all states were encouraged to provide suggestions, with UP proposing initiatives to advance towards becoming an “Uttam Pradesh.” The meeting witnessed each state expressing its commitment to enhancing its financial standing and fostering growth.
Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka underscored the challenges faced by states and advocated for increased funding in essential sectors like education, health, and irrigation, vital for sustainable development and public welfare. West Bengal Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya highlighted that every minister articulated their state’s concerns and requested fair treatment, urging the release of approximately Rs 1.97 lakh crore in pending dues, specifying the sectors awaiting these funds.
Jharkhand Finance Minister Radha Krishna Kishor raised issues regarding financial constraints and delays in receiving central funds, noting the burden on states under central schemes despite limited resources. He also raised concerns about potential misuse of central agencies in states where the ruling party at the Centre lacks power. Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema addressed the economic setbacks faced by Punjab due to border tensions and floods, emphasizing the need for the timely disbursement of a previously announced relief package of Rs 16 crore.
