Supporters of former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, including ex-legislators, have shown solidarity and urged for his appointment as the state Congress chief, replacing the current leader Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. They have given a one-week ultimatum to the party’s central leadership to make a decision on Channi’s leadership, stating that the Congress cannot win under Warring’s leadership.
This demand follows the central leadership’s recent decision to retain Warring as the state Congress chief, leading to discontent among Channi’s supporters. The supporters gathered at Channi’s residence in Morinda town, emphasizing that for the Congress to regain power in Punjab, Channi should be appointed as the state unit chief.
Notably, Jalandhar Member of Parliament Channi, a key contender for the state chief position, has not made any official statements regarding his potential appointment or reservations. The informal meeting convened by Channi saw the participation of various senior Congress leaders, former ministers, and legislators, all echoing the sentiment that Channi’s leadership is crucial for the party’s success in Punjab.
Former legislator Darshan Singh Brar emphasized that without Channi as the state president, the Congress’s chances of forming the government in Punjab are slim. Another party leader, Brinder Singh Dhillon, mentioned that a committee has been formed to communicate their concerns to the high command, highlighting the importance of defeating the AAP government in the upcoming elections.
Former minister Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa reiterated the group’s respect for the high command while stressing the necessity for the Congress to secure victory in Punjab. The leaders expressed the prevailing sentiment among the people in favor of Channi’s leadership, emphasizing that their actions are driven by the voice of the masses.
