The Supreme Court has prolonged the stay on its previous ruling regarding the definition of the Aravalli Hills, instructing the maintenance of the status quo until further notice. A three-judge Bench, led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, emphasized the continuation of the interim direction that suspended the earlier judgment defining the Aravalli Hills.
Additionally, the Bench, which includes Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi, reiterated the court’s intention to establish a specialized expert committee to assist in examining all aspects concerning the Aravalli range. This proposed committee is expected to comprise distinguished environmentalists, scientists, and mining experts, operating under the direct supervision of the Supreme Court.
The apex court urged all involved parties to propose suitable experts with domain-specific knowledge for potential inclusion in the committee. It also addressed concerns about ongoing illegal mining activities in various locations, directing the Rajasthan government to prevent any unauthorized extraction in the Aravalli region and ensure that the law is enforced against offenders.
