The Supreme Court has requested the Rajasthan government to review self-styled godman Asaram Bapu’s medical reports to determine if his health justifies granting him interim bail on medical grounds. Asaram is challenging his conviction and life sentence in a 2013 minor rape case, also seeking interim bail due to health concerns. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that Asaram had been in good health, having recently visited Ayodhya and Kashi Vishwanath.
The Rajasthan government will assess Asaram’s health condition and provide its stance to the court by July 21. Asaram’s counsel argues his client is at high risk and in a serious condition, while the state government will determine the necessity of interim bail for medical treatment. The Supreme Court emphasized that if Asaram’s health requires it, temporary bail for treatment could be considered.
The court had previously declined to grant Asaram interim medical bail, awaiting the state government’s response. Asaram was convicted in 2018 for sexually assaulting a minor and is serving a life sentence in another sexual assault case. The Rajasthan High Court upheld his conviction while acquitting co-accused individuals. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on July 21.
