The Special Vigilance Unit (SVU) in Bihar has ramped up its efforts to combat corruption in 2026. SVU Director General Jitendra Singh Gangwar announced that the Bureau has already filed 28 cases in the first two months of the year, averaging around 14 cases per month. These cases involve serious offenses like bribery and possession of disproportionate assets.
Highlighting a significant milestone, the DG mentioned that four cases have already seen verdicts this year. He expressed optimism that the number of convictions in 2026 will exceed last year’s total of 30 cases. Despite this progress, the SVU is grappling with a shortage of manpower, with about one-third of Inspector and DSP-level positions vacant.
To alleviate this issue, the SVU has requested additional personnel from the Police Headquarters. The Bureau operates round the clock, swiftly acting on credible corruption-related information. The DG urged the public to report instances of bribery or misconduct by government officials promptly, emphasizing the importance of citizen cooperation in bolstering the anti-corruption campaign.
With a focus on sustained action, stringent enforcement, and increased public involvement, the SVU aims to make 2026 a pivotal year in Bihar’s fight against corruption. In a recent development, the SVU arrested Roshan Kumar, an Assistant Engineer, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh. Kumar had purportedly demanded the bribe from a contractor for approving bills related to school repairs and other works.
