Swami Avimukteshwaranand has received a notice from the Prayagraj Mela Authority regarding his use of the title ‘Shankaracharya,’ typically reserved for top gurus in Sanatana Dharma. The notice, citing a Supreme Court order, highlights that he is not recognized as the Shankaracharya of the Jyotirmath. He has been asked to provide clarification within 24 hours on the legitimacy of his designation.
The notice questions the basis on which Swami Avimukteshwaranand has adopted the title ‘Shankaracharya’ and requests a prompt response. It refers to a legal case involving a dispute over the rightful Shankaracharya of Jyotir Math (Jyotish Peeth), with conflicting claims by different spiritual leaders.
The case, involving Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati and Swami Vasudevanand Saraswati, centers on their eligibility and the validity of their appointments as the spiritual head of Jyotir Math. This dispute, rooted in historical disagreements, has undergone legal scrutiny at various levels, including trial courts, High Courts, and the Supreme Court.
Hindu scholars emphasize the traditional significance of a Shankaracharya for a peeth, stressing the importance of spiritual leadership continuity. The title ‘Shankaracharya’ is commonly associated with the heads of monasteries following the Advaita Vedanta tradition of Hinduism, established by Adi Shankaracharya at four principal mutts across India.
The recent notice to Swami Avimukteshwaranand by the Mela Authority coincides with a clash during the Mauni Amavasya bathing festival between his followers and the Magh Mela administration. The spiritual leader’s protest, triggered by alleged interference during the holy dip in the Ganga, led to demands for apologies from senior officials.
