The Drug Controller General of India has increased regulatory oversight to curb the unauthorized sale and promotion of type 2 diabetes drugs, also known as GLP-1 drugs. Recent audits and inspections covered 49 businesses nationwide, including online pharmacy warehouses, drug wholesalers, retailers, and weight loss clinics. These checks aimed to identify violations like unauthorized sales, improper prescriptions, and misleading marketing practices.
Stricter surveillance measures will persist in the upcoming weeks, with businesses found in breach facing penalties such as license cancellations, fines, and legal repercussions. Only endocrinologists, internal medicine specialists, and cardiologists are authorized to prescribe these drugs, as highlighted by the government. An advisory issued on March 10, 2026, urged manufacturers to refrain from misleading advertisements that could promote unsupervised usage.
GLP-1 drugs, which aid in managing type 2 diabetes and obesity, come with potential side effects ranging from nausea to severe complications like pancreatitis and kidney injury. Patients are advised to seek these medications through legitimate, regulated channels under the guidance of qualified medical professionals. The recent influx of various GLP-1 drug variants in the Indian market has raised concerns about their unrestricted availability through retail pharmacies, online platforms, wholesalers, and wellness clinics.
