Switzerland coach Murat Yakin expressed strong disapproval of Breel Embolo’s dismissal during their FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final loss to Argentina. Embolo received a red card due to a case of mistaken identity, with the referee overturning a yellow card initially given to an Argentine player.

Yakin voiced his confusion over the decision, stating that the booking was unjustified and that Embolo’s actions were innocent with no ill intent. Despite the setback, Yakin acknowledged Argentina’s victory but disagreed with the referee’s call that influenced the match’s outcome.

Following Embolo’s expulsion, Argentina’s Lionel Messi nearly secured a win in regular time, while a stunning goal from Alvarez and another from Lautaro sealed Switzerland’s fate in the match. Yakin emphasized that the pivotal moment of Embolo’s red card significantly impacted the game’s result.
