The Taiwanese government is enhancing collaboration with the US in artificial intelligence (AI) and critical minerals to mitigate risks arising from increased competition with Beijing, as per a recent report. Discussions between senior Taiwanese and US officials focused on cooperation in AI, technology, and drones during a high-level forum, leading the US State Department to recognize Taiwan as a crucial partner. President Lai Ching-te emphasized the importance of seeking economic and technological partnerships with democratic nations instead of China for trade and economic growth.
Taiwan’s strategic shift towards strengthening ties with Washington aligns with efforts to navigate the escalating rivalry between the US and China, according to the report. President Lai expressed confidence in Taiwan’s economic trajectory and its ability to collaborate with democratic allies to bolster technological connections. Both Taiwan and the US formalized agreements on economic security cooperation and endorsed the Pax Silica Declaration, an initiative spearheaded by the US to safeguard artificial intelligence and semiconductor supply chains.
While the Taiwanese government’s approach emphasizes aligning with democratic partners, Hsiao Hsu-tsen, deputy chairman of Taiwan’s main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), advocated for cross-strait cooperation to maximize economic gains globally. President Lai contrasted the current administration’s economic progress with the previous government’s pace, underscoring the choice between deepening ties with democratic nations or reverting to closer engagement with China. The focus remains on integrating Taiwan into US-led and allied supply chains, particularly in critical sectors like semiconductors and AI.
