The Tamil Nadu government has announced a goal to establish 20,000 public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations by 2031. This initiative is part of the state’s strategy to promote clean mobility, enhance charging infrastructure, and attract private investment in the growing EV sector. High-level meetings in Chennai discussed the roadmap over two days, involving senior officials and industry experts.
Chief Secretary Sai Kumar chaired a review meeting at the Secretariat to evaluate the current status of EV charging facilities in Tamil Nadu and assess infrastructure development progress. Officials identified challenges in expanding the charging network and discussed strategies to ensure broad access to charging facilities in urban and rural areas.
A subsequent technical meeting, led by the Chairman and Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation, focused on planning, policy support, and implementation strategies for scaling up the charging infrastructure. The government reiterated its commitment to establishing 20,000 public charging stations by 2031, aiming to enhance charging accessibility and promote electric vehicle adoption.
The expansion of the charging network aligns with Tamil Nadu’s clean energy and sustainable transport goals, aiming to boost the use of electric vehicles and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The initiative seeks to attract private sector involvement in setting up and operating charging stations through supportive policies and investment-friendly measures. By encouraging private investment, the government aims to expedite infrastructure development while sharing the financial burden.
Developing the charging infrastructure is crucial for reducing vehicular emissions, enhancing urban air quality, and supporting Tamil Nadu’s climate action objectives. Coordinated efforts among government agencies, industry stakeholders, and technical partners are deemed essential to achieving the 2031 target and establishing Tamil Nadu as a prominent electric mobility hub.
