Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin faced defeat in the Kolathur constituency, becoming only the second sitting Chief Minister in the state’s history to lose an Assembly election after J. Jayalalithaa. V.S. Babu of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged victorious over Stalin, marking a significant outcome of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections and highlighting the rise of the TVK as a major political force.
This upset mirrors a similar event in 1996 when Jayalalithaa was defeated in the Bargur constituency by the DMK’s E.G. Sugavanam. Stalin’s loss breaks a longstanding trend where sitting Chief Ministers in Tamil Nadu usually retained their seats, signaling a notable shift in the state’s political landscape. Despite a career spanning over four decades with both victories and setbacks, Stalin’s defeat in 2026 signifies a significant political change.
Stalin, who began his electoral journey in 1984 from Thousand Lights, faced initial defeats before securing victories in subsequent years. His move to Kolathur in 2011 resulted in consecutive wins in 2011, 2016, and 2021. However, his recent defeat, despite his consistent track record, underlines a major political transformation in Tamil Nadu. Beyond electoral politics, Stalin has held key administrative positions, including serving as Chennai’s first directly elected Mayor in 1996 and leading the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam to power in 2021 after his father’s passing.
