The fireworks industry in Tamil Nadu is facing challenges due to regulations and market issues, prompting efforts to seek policy backing from the Centre. Industry representatives highlight the sector’s struggles with tighter regulations, seasonal constraints, and limited access to benefits. Discussions have been initiated with government officials, including DPIIT Secretary Amardeep Singh Bhatia, to address these concerns.
One major issue raised is the lack of formal recognition within economic classifications, hindering access to subsidies and financial aid. The industry is not clearly defined under MSME or corporate categories, impacting its eligibility for government support. Despite providing employment opportunities, fireworks are often viewed as hazardous, affecting policy backing.
The association has presented proposals to the government, seeking financial assistance, improved credit access, and inclusion in incentive programs. Operational limitations under the Explosives Act, 2008, such as restrictions on night-time manufacturing, have also been flagged for review. Revisiting certain clauses while upholding safety standards could enhance productivity and meet seasonal demands.
Industry leaders emphasize the need for a balanced approach that ensures safety and environmental concerns while supporting a traditional sector vital for livelihoods. Ongoing consultations with government bodies aim to bring clarity and structured assistance for the industry’s stability and employment sustainability.
