The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) President, C. Joseph Vijay, is actively seeking legislative support as the government formation process in Tamil Nadu reaches a critical juncture. After winning 108 seats in the Assembly elections, the TVK has approached the CPI for backing in forming the next government. The CPI State secretary confirmed receiving a letter from Vijay requesting support.
M. Veerapandian, the CPI State secretary, stated that the party will discuss the matter during an executive committee meeting on May 8 and may hold an emergency State committee meeting the next day for a final decision. The TVK has also engaged with the Congress party and the CPI(M), both allies in the Secular Progressive Alliance.
While the Congress and CPI(M) won five and two seats respectively in the elections, sources suggest that the Congress is inclined to support the TVK, pending an official announcement. With the TVK’s effective strength likely to reduce to 107 after Vijay resigns from one of his two constituencies, alliance-building becomes crucial for securing the majority mark of 117 in the 233-member House.
To bolster its numbers, the TVK is actively communicating with various parties and legislators from both the DMK-led alliance and the AIADMK camp. The party has formally staked its claim to form the government by submitting a letter to the Tamil Nadu Governor, citing its status as the single largest party with a vote share of 34.92 percent. However, the Governor has reportedly requested the TVK to demonstrate sufficient numerical support before extending a formal invitation for government formation.
