The Tamil Nadu government is set to increase nursing education by introducing approximately 1,500 new B.Sc. Nursing seats in government medical colleges across the state starting from the upcoming academic year. This initiative aims to enhance the affordability and accessibility of professional nursing education, catering to the rising demand for skilled healthcare professionals in the nation.

Currently, there are six government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu offering a total of 510 B.Sc. Nursing seats. Students enrolled in these colleges pay a nominal annual tuition fee of ₹13,750, making government institutions a more economical choice compared to private colleges where fees can reach up to ₹1.20 lakh per year.

Responding to persistent requests from students and parents for more government nursing seats, officials have decided to expand the nursing education infrastructure. This move is anticipated to ease the financial burden on families and create more opportunities for aspiring nursing students in the state.

The government’s plan includes introducing B.Sc. Nursing courses in 14 government medical colleges across Tamil Nadu, including institutions in Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Dharmapuri, Tirunelveli, Tiruchirappalli, and Namakkal. Additionally, the authorities are working on augmenting paramedical education along with undergraduate medical and dental programs to strengthen the healthcare workforce in the state.

As part of the expansion program, the government is also looking to add over 700 pharmacy course seats. Efforts are underway to develop the necessary infrastructure such as classrooms, laboratories, and hostels, and recruit faculty members to meet regulatory requirements before the commencement of the courses.

Officials are optimistic that the infrastructure enhancements and faculty appointments will be completed on time, enabling the new B.Sc. Nursing and pharmacy courses to kick off in the upcoming academic year, thereby significantly increasing the availability of affordable healthcare education in Tamil Nadu.
