Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has approved the resignation of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and his Council of Ministers. He has requested Stalin to serve as the caretaker Chief Minister until a new government is formed. This move follows the electoral defeat of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance in the recent Assembly elections.
Stalin decided to step down after the alliance secured only 73 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, falling short of the majority mark. Despite contesting 164 constituencies, the DMK won around 60 seats, leading to its transition to the Opposition. Additionally, Stalin lost his Kolathur constituency, a seat he had held since 2011, to V.S. Babu of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
V.S. Babu’s victory in Kolathur is notable as he was previously associated with the DMK before changing sides. This win signifies a significant shift in voter sentiment and the political landscape in Tamil Nadu. As post-election discussions progress, focus now shifts to the formation of the new government, while Stalin is expected to assume the role of Leader of the Opposition.
