Tamil Nadu has initiated ‘Kuppai Thiruvizha 5.0’, a 12-day program focusing on waste collection and management to move towards zero-waste-to-landfill. The campaign, organized by Clean Tamil Nadu Company Limited (CTCL) and Thooimai Mission, will run from January 12 to January 23, involving both urban and rural areas.
The campaign’s key objectives include promoting behavioral and cultural changes to enhance public responsibility for waste segregation and management. It targets the removal of Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs) to transform these areas into useful public spaces, stressing the importance of collective cleanliness efforts.
Kuppai Thiruvizha 5.0 emphasizes resource recovery by setting up collection points for recyclable materials, ensuring waste diversion back into the economy. Self-Help Groups (SHGs) under the Mahalir Thooimai Iyakkam will collaborate with local bodies and aggregators to streamline waste collection and recovery processes effectively.
Incorporating the ‘Pugai Illa Bhogi’ campaign during the festive season, the government discourages waste burning on Bhogi day. Instead, materials will be collected at designated spots to prevent landfill dumping. The initiative requires coordination among various departments, with a digital dashboard for monitoring and training for nodal officers to ensure smooth execution.
