Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar has called upon AIADMK’s Edappadi K. Palaniswami, along with four ex-AIADMK lawmakers, to appear before him on July 30. The summons are related to ongoing defection proceedings under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution. The Speaker has asked the individuals to provide further clarification in the case.

Former AIADMK MLAs Maragatham Kumaravel, P. Sathyabama, S. Jeyakumar, and Esakki Subaya have been allotted specific time slots for the hearing. Palaniswami has also been requested to be present during the proceedings to offer additional insights into the matter. The disqualification petition was initiated by Palaniswami after a trust vote following the formation of the C. Joseph Vijay-led TVK government.

The defection case emerged when 25 AIADMK legislators supported the new government against the party whip. While 21 were pardoned by Palaniswami, the remaining four resigned and joined the ruling TVK. This led to the continuation of disqualification proceedings against them. The Speaker has conducted previous hearings where the former legislators explained their actions.

The ongoing inquiry involves seeking further clarification from Palaniswami based on the explanations provided by the ex-legislators. The Speaker is expected to review all submissions before determining the next steps in the anti-defection process. The outcome of the inquiry holds significance for both the AIADMK and the ruling TVK government, with potential political and legal implications.
