In a blow to the DMK-led alliance before the Assembly elections, T. Velmurugan, the founder of the Tamil Nadu Vazhvurimai Party (TNVP), announced his departure from the coalition. Velmurugan expressed dissatisfaction with the seat-sharing arrangements and the state government’s lack of action on crucial social justice issues.
Velmurugan, who previously won the Panruti constituency in Cuddalore district on the DMK’s Rising Sun symbol, had requested at least two constituencies and the right to contest under a separate party symbol this time. However, the DMK indicated it could only offer one seat, leading to discontent within the TNVP.
The disagreement intensified after Velmurugan presented a list of 10 demands to the DMK leadership, stating that his party would continue in the alliance only if these demands, including a 10.5% internal reservation for the Vanniyar community and a caste-based census in Tamil Nadu, were met.
Velmurugan accused the DMK government of neglecting his party’s concerns both inside and outside the Assembly. He criticized the DMK for not taking decisive action on conducting a caste-based census and questioned its commitment to social justice.
Clarifying his future political path, Velmurugan ruled out aligning with the BJP-led alliance and mentioned that the TNVP is exploring partnerships with parties willing to address its demands. Discussions are ongoing, and a decision on alliances will be made soon.
