In a significant shift in Tamil Nadu’s political history, the 2026 Assembly election marked the end of nearly six decades of Dravidian party dominance. The newly established Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay, achieved a remarkable victory in its electoral debut.
Since the early years of Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, the Congress held sway until 1967 when the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) led by C. N. Annadurai came to power, ushering in the era of Dravidian politics. Following Annadurai’s tenure, M. Karunanidhi took over and secured another victory for the DMK in 1971.
The political landscape saw a transformation with the emergence of actor-turned-politician M. G. Ramachandran, who founded the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) after splitting from the DMK. Under MGR’s leadership, the AIADMK became a dominant force, winning successive elections and establishing itself as a key player in Tamil Nadu politics.
The state witnessed a bipolar contest between the DMK and AIADMK after MGR’s passing in 1987. Over the years, these two parties took turns in governing Tamil Nadu, with the DMK winning in 1989, 1996, 2006, and 2021, while the AIADMK emerged victorious in 1991, 2001, 2011, and 2016. Notable leaders like Karunanidhi and J. Jayalalithaa defined this era.
However, the 2026 election brought a new narrative to Tamil Nadu’s political scene with the entry of TVK led by Vijay. The party’s successful electoral debut broke the long-standing dominance of Dravidian parties, signaling a generational shift and a demand for alternative leadership. This outcome marks the dawn of a fresh era in Tamil Nadu politics, moving beyond the traditional DMK-AIADMK rivalry to create a more competitive and dynamic political environment.
