Around 97% of HR leaders in India’s tech sector predict that by 2027, work will be carried out by humans in conjunction with AI rather than sporadically interacting with it, as per a report by Nasscom and Indeed. The study, based on a survey of over 120 HR leaders in the tech industry, reveals that 20-40% of tasks in tech companies are already driven by AI. Moreover, 45% of respondents noted that AI now handles over 40% of software development tasks.
Ketaki Karnik, Head of Research at Nasscom, emphasized the importance of upskilling and building capabilities to ensure that talent progresses to higher-value tasks and delivers significant outcomes for businesses. The report underscores a transition where AI is no longer just a support tool but an integral component of daily responsibilities, workflows, and decision-making processes, with significant involvement in intelligent automation (39%) and business process management (37%).
The survey also highlighted concerns about the quality of AI outputs, with over half of respondents pointing out low-quality or incomplete results, emphasizing the necessity of human supervision. Effective human-AI partnerships are emerging in advanced activities like defining scopes, designing system architectures, and creating data models, while more routine tasks such as generating boilerplate code and unit tests are expected to be increasingly automated by AI in the coming years.
In terms of hiring practices, there is a shift towards skills-based assessments, with 85% of managers prioritizing skills over credentials and 98% recognizing the importance of hybrid and multidisciplinary skills. Additionally, 83% of HR leaders have adapted work structures by introducing AI-specific roles, while 79% have made internal reskilling a key strategy for AI adoption. Notably, 80% of organizations are adopting a hybrid work model, with a majority of employees working from the office three or more days a week.
