A teenager in eastern Afghanistan’s Ghazni province was seriously injured when an unexploded device from past wars detonated. The incident happened in Gilan district as the boy, mistaking it for a toy, started playing with the object. Afghanistan is known to be heavily affected by landmines and unexploded ordnance, posing a significant risk to civilians.
At least 96 people lost their lives, and 328 others were injured in Afghanistan due to mine explosions and unexploded munitions in the past year. The country has seen 225 such incidents between April 2025 and March 2026, resulting in 474 casualties, with a significant number being children. Unexploded ordnance remains a major humanitarian threat in Afghanistan, especially in rural and conflict-affected regions.
Officials have highlighted the importance of caution when encountering such devices and urged residents to report any suspicious objects promptly to security authorities. It is crucial for the safety of the population to be vigilant and avoid handling potentially dangerous items left over from previous conflicts.
