Telangana High Court has deferred its decision on Congress leader Pawan Khera’s request for interim protection from arrest in a case filed by Assam Police. Khera is seeking transit anticipatory bail to address the charges in Assam. The court, after hearing arguments from both sides, is expected to announce its ruling on Friday.
Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Khera, criticized the FIR by Assam Police as politically motivated. On the other hand, Advocate General of Assam Devajit Saikia questioned the jurisdiction of the anticipatory bail plea in Hyderabad. The case against Khera involves allegations of defamation, forgery, and criminal conspiracy.
Assam Police’s case against Khera stems from his accusations against Chief Minister Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma. Khera alleged that she holds multiple foreign passports and undisclosed assets abroad. Despite a visit by Assam Police to Khera’s Delhi residence, he was not found. Security measures have been implemented at both his Delhi and Hyderabad residences.
Pawan Khera, who has been in the spotlight for his claims against the Chief Minister’s wife, faces charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The controversy arose following Khera’s press conference where he made serious allegations against Riniki Bhuyan Sarma. In response, Khera demanded that the Chief Minister address the accusations instead of resorting to intimidation tactics.
