In a significant move, Telangana will implement a Mid-Day Meal Scheme for higher secondary students and a breakfast scheme for pre-primary to intermediate students starting from the academic year 2026-27. The state budget for 2026-27, presented by Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka in the Telangana Assembly, included these welfare initiatives. The Mid-Day Meal Scheme will be extended to students in government junior colleges pursuing higher secondary education.
Moreover, the Telangana government, led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, will introduce a breakfast scheme statewide for students from pre-primary to intermediate levels, ensuring quality nutrition. As part of this scheme, students will receive milk three days a week and ragi malt on the remaining three days. Vikramarka emphasized that these measures aim to enhance nutrition and health outcomes, boost attendance and punctuality, and reduce dropouts and absenteeism, while also easing the burden on working parents.
Additionally, the government will provide retrofitted motorized vehicles to differently-abled students in higher secondary education. A scholarship of ₹2,000 per month will also be granted to trainees undergoing training in Advanced Technology Centers (formerly known as Industrial Training Institutes). Furthermore, the Indiramma Family Life Insurance Scheme is set to roll out on June 2, 2026, offering life insurance of Rs.5 lakh to each of the 1 crore 15 lakh families in the state.
Furthermore, a cashless health scheme for government employees and pensioners was announced, enabling treatment for 1,998 diseases in government hospitals and 421 empaneled private hospitals. Each employee will receive a digital health card, benefiting around 23.51 lakh government employees, pensioners, and their dependent family members. Notably, the state will introduce a comprehensive accident insurance scheme, covering government employees and pensioners in case of accidents, with varying coverage amounts based on the circumstances.
