Telangana’s ruling Congress party has taken an early lead in the ongoing municipal elections. As per the latest updates, the Congress has secured a majority in six municipalities, while the main opposition party, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), has won in one municipality. The counting of votes began on Friday, with over 73% of voters turning out for the elections held in 116 municipalities and seven corporations.
Results for 400 seats out of 2,582 wards in municipalities have been declared so far. The Congress party has emerged victorious in 229 wards, followed by BRS with 123 wards, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in a distant third with 36 seats. Notably, the first municipality result favored BRS, securing 14 out of 18 wards in Gaddapotaram municipality.
The Congress party has also clinched majorities in several other municipalities across different districts of Telangana. These include Nandikonda and Halia in Nalgonda district, Ashwaraopet in Khammam district, Dornakal and Maripeda in Mahabubabad district, and Sultabanad in Peddapalli district. The voter turnout stood at 75.88% in municipalities and 66.05% in municipal corporations, with a total of 38,09,406 voters casting their votes.
