Tension persists in Manipur’s Ukhrul district as around 20 Tangkhul Naga civilians were reportedly detained by individuals from another community while traveling on the Ukhrul-Imphal route. The incident took place near Shangkai village, located approximately 5 km from Litan Police Station. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh expressed deep concern over the situation and urged for the safe release of the detained civilians.
Chief Minister Singh emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all Manipur citizens. He directed senior police and administrative officials to take immediate action to monitor the situation closely and secure the release of the civilians. Additionally, he called upon Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and stakeholders to help de-escalate the situation and prevent further violence.
Ethnic clashes erupted in February between the Kuki and Tangkhul Naga communities in Litan Sareikhong due to territorial disputes, resulting in the burning of over 30 houses. The Tangkhul Naga Long issued an ultimatum for the safe release of the alleged kidnapped Naga passengers. Security forces, accompanied by senior police officials, initiated a combing operation to rescue the captives and apprehend the suspected kidnappers.
The Shangkai Village Authority appealed to the government and relevant authorities to intervene urgently for the safety and release of the detained villagers. They also urged for swift action to prevent further escalation and restore peace in the area.
