Tension gripped Beldanga in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district following the arrival of the body of Alauddin Sheikh, a local migrant worker allegedly killed in Jharkhand. Sheikh, aged 36 and a resident of Sujarpur-Kamarpur village panchayat, worked as a street hawker in Jharkhand. His family received news of his death, with Jharkhand Police reporting that his body was found hanging in his rented room.
The family, however, disputes the police account, claiming Sheikh was lynched before being hanged. Upon the body’s return, locals protested by blocking National Highways and railway tracks, causing traffic chaos and disrupting train services. Police are on-site attempting to persuade the agitated crowd to end the blockades.
Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari has urged the West Bengal police Director General to deploy additional forces to restore order. Adhikari criticized the current situation, citing rampant stone-pelting by anti-social elements and accusing the Trinamool Congress of supporting rioters.
