Thai Army spokesperson Winthai Suvaree confirmed that Cambodia contacted local Thai military units, asserting no plans to shoot into Thai territory. This statement followed an incident where Cambodia allegedly breached a ceasefire by firing a mortar round in the border area, injuring a Thai soldier. According to Winthai, Cambodia attributed the incident to an operational mistake during a mission.
Thailand’s 2nd Area Command reported that the injured Thai soldier suffered shrapnel wounds to his right arm but is in stable condition. The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation, with the command emphasizing heightened vigilance to ensure the safety of military personnel and residents. Updates on the situation will be provided promptly.
Cambodia’s Interior Ministry Spokesperson Touch Sokhak disclosed that 68.4% of Cambodian evacuees from a recent border conflict with Thailand have returned home. Out of 649,023 evacuees, 444,179 have gone back, while around 204,844 individuals, including women and children, remain in displacement camps. The two countries agreed to a ceasefire on December 27, 2025, after a three-week armed conflict resulting in casualties on both sides.
Cambodia has proposed a special meeting with Thailand in January to discuss border demarcation issues. In a press release, Cambodia’s State Secretariat of Border Affairs revealed that Cambodia requested a meeting to address territorial integrity violations by Thai military forces. The meeting is intended to focus on survey and demarcation works, seeking to resolve ongoing border disputes.
