Thailand took an early lead over hosts India in the Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania Group I Qualifiers at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association (DLTA) Stadium. Rain delayed the start of play by nearly three hours, with the opening singles match beginning close to 6 p.m. India’s Vaishnavi Adkar, ranked 383rd globally, faced off against Anchisa Chanta, ranked 456th, with Chanta winning the match 6-1, 6-3.
In the second singles rubber, Thai veteran Patcharin Cheapchandej led Sahaja Yamalapalli 6-4, 1-6, 4-3 before rain once again halted play. Cheapchandej, with a 7-3 singles record, broke early in the first set but Yamalapalli fought back to level before Cheapchandej claimed the set 6-4. The match will resume on Wednesday morning.
Thailand’s victory improved Chanta’s singles record to 8-1 in the competition. The doubles rubber between Ankita Raina and Rutuja Bhosale against Thailand’s Thasaporn Naklo and Peangtarn Plipuech is scheduled to follow the singles matches. India will also face New Zealand in their next tie.
