Thailand’s second seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn faced a surprising first-round loss at the China Open badminton tournament in Changzhou. The former world champion was defeated by Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke in a tough match that ended 21-13, 8-21, 21-19. Meanwhile, China’s Wang Zhiyi staged a remarkable comeback to secure a hard-fought victory.

In the women’s singles category, Wang, a home favorite, overcame Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour in a challenging match that concluded 15-21, 21-5, 21-18. Another Chinese player, Han Yue, also displayed resilience by defeating Türkiye’s Neslihan Yigit after losing the first game.

Chinese doubles pairs dominated with comfortable wins in various categories. Notably, men’s doubles fourth seeds Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang defeated India’s Hariharan Amsakarunan and Arjun Madathil Ramachandran 21-16, 21-7. Additionally, the top mixed doubles pair Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping triumphed over India’s Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde.

The China Open in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, will conclude on Sunday, with intense matches expected in the upcoming rounds. In a separate development, India’s P.V. Sindhu continued her winning streak with a hard-fought victory over compatriot Unnati Hooda. Sindhu’s triumph set up a challenging second-round encounter against China’s Chen Yufei, a former Olympic champion.

Ayush Shetty of India also made headlines by defeating Indonesia’s Alwi Farhan in a thrilling match to advance to the men’s singles pre-quarterfinals. Shetty’s victory marked a significant upset and showcased his potential in the competitive arena.
