The renowned Thewa art from Rajasthan’s Pratapgarh is gaining international acclaim, crossing borders to make a mark on the global stage. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Slovakia, the art garnered global recognition. Prime Minister Modi presented ‘Thewa motif cufflinks’ made with this art to the President of Slovakia, showcasing the rich tradition of Indian handicrafts.
Rakesh Soni, an artisan from Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur, has preserved this traditional art for 25 years, playing a crucial role in bringing renewed recognition to Thewa art through his dedication and craftsmanship. He learned this art from his maternal uncle in Pratapgarh, who has a long-standing association with this craft. Today, Thewa art jewelry and artifacts are highly sought after by art enthusiasts, offering employment and growth opportunities.
Thewa art is distinguished by its intricate gold engravings on colored glass, a technique that sets it apart from other handicrafts. Rakesh Soni praised Prime Minister Modi for elevating Indian traditional arts on the global platform. He also created a special Thewa art brooch for PM Modi, aiming to present it to him for a closer appreciation of the craft’s artistry and dedication.
“I have dedicated 25 years to this craft, mastering its intricate techniques. Crafting a single set takes about three days due to the detailed work involved. This art form, dating back 400 years to the Mughal era, demands meticulous attention,” shared Rakesh Soni. He expressed his gratitude to PM Modi for spotlighting Thewa art globally, acknowledging the art’s historical significance and cultural value.
