Alert security personnel in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) have apprehended three alleged poachers and seized weapons. The arrests were made based on specific intelligence inputs, with the accused suspected of planning rhino poaching activities in the park. Recovered items include a country-made rifle bolt and butt found in Majuli district.
KNPTR authorities have identified the arrested individuals as Kiran Pegu, Riju Pegu alias Rijukanta, and Pulen Kaman, hailing from different districts. The park has intensified anti-poaching efforts in recent years, with the women frontline forest personnel, known as ‘Van Durga,’ playing a significant role in wildlife protection. Due to enhanced vigilance, incidents of poaching in Kaziranga have notably decreased.
The Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famous for its diverse wildlife, including the ‘Big Five’ species. Spread across several districts, the park has witnessed a decline in poaching activities, thanks to sustained conservation efforts by authorities.
