Three held, illegal cash worth over Rs 20 lakh seized from Bengal's Bishnupur

Kolkata, July 28 (IANS) The police have recovered illegal cash, arms and ammunition during a joint raid from Bishnupur area in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district and arrested three persons in connection with it, the police said on Tuesday.

The joint operation was conducted by a team consisting of police personnel from Bishnupur Police Station and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Diamond Harbour Police on Monday night.

According to the police, during the raid two arms, three rounds of live ammunitions and huge amount of cash worth Rs 20,65,900 were recovered.

The arrested have been identified as Bablu Jati (42), Adarsha Jati (23) and Koushik Jati (33).

Accordingly, a case has been registered at Bishnupur Police station against the accused under relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Arms Act, 1959.

The police said that the raids were conducted after receiving a tip-off from a confidential source.

“Last night on receipt of credible source information regarding illegal cash and arms and ammunition, a joint raid was organised with team consisting of police personnel from Bishnupur Police Station and the SOG of Diamond Harbour Police District. During the raid, arms and ammunition and cash worth more than Rs 20 lakh were recovered. Three persons have been arrested. Investigation is on,” a senior officer of Diamond Harbour district police said.

Last month (on June 20), a large quantity of firearms and cartridges were recovered in Basanti of South 24 Parganas district.

Two local Trinamool Congress leaders were arrested in connection with the incident.

The names of the arrested were Shaokat Gayen and Zafar Sheikh.

Total 14 long-range firearms and 95 rounds of bullets were found from the pond area of Shaokat Gayen.

Meanwhile, on June 15, a cache of arms and ammunition was found while casting a net in a pond in Habra of North 24 Parganas district.

Eight firearms were recovered from the pond. These weapons were kept in two bags that were caught in the net by fishermen. Along with this, a total of 97 rounds of cartridges were found.
