The golf community and social media were shocked when former World No.1 Tiger Woods was arrested in Florida following a car accident near his residence. Woods, a golf legend, was taken into custody on suspicion of drunk driving after a rollover car crash close to his Florida home. Despite his recent return to the golf circuit, Woods’ arrest has stirred concern among fans and observers.
Local authorities reported that Woods, aged 50, displayed signs of “impairment” after the car crash. A photograph released by the Martin County police showed Woods with bloodshot eyes. The police confirmed that Woods, a multiple PGA title winner, was arrested and taken to the Martin County jail in Florida.
Reports indicated that alcohol was not a factor in the incident, although Woods declined to undergo a urinalysis test. Martin County sheriff John Budensiek revealed that Woods was driving a Land Rover that overturned while trying to pass a truck on a narrow road near his Jupiter Island residence. The vehicle collided with a trailer, slid off the road, and ended up on its side.
Sheriff Budensiek stated that DUI investigators found signs of impairment in Woods and conducted various tests, taking into account his previous injuries and surgeries. Despite initial doubts about alcohol involvement, a urinalysis test refusal led to Woods being charged with DUI, property damage, and refusal to submit to a lawful test.
This incident marks at least the third time Woods has been in a car crash, with the most recent one occurring in February 2021 when his SUV crashed off a coastal road in Los Angeles, resulting in severe leg and ankle injuries. Woods mentioned that doctors had considered amputation following the 2021 crash.
Since the 2021 accident, Woods has participated in 11 tournaments but has not finished better than 16 shots behind the winner in the four events where he completed all 72 holes. The golf world expressed concern over Woods’ situation, while social media buzzed with reactions to his arrest, including sarcastic comments and memes about the fallen sports icon.
