The tragic incident in Bihar’s East Champaran has claimed the lives of eleven individuals, with several others in critical condition. Police in Bihar have intensified raids, seizing large quantities of illicit liquor. Bihar’s Director General of Police, Vinay Kumar, termed the event deeply tragic and highlighted the prevention of a major disaster through timely action. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to investigate the network behind the incident, with the recovery of a significant amount of methanol, a highly toxic substance commonly used in adulterating illicit liquor.
The investigation revealed the seizure of nearly 1,500 liters of methanol, potentially averting a higher death toll. Authorities are taking strict legal action against those responsible, ensuring a thorough investigation into all aspects of the case. Methanol, present in spurious liquor, poses severe health risks upon consumption, leading to symptoms like headache, vomiting, and organ damage. The tragedy began on April 2, resulting in multiple deaths and hospitalizations, with the death toll reaching eleven by April 7.
