A tragic incident unfolded in Bihar’s Madhubani district as seven children went for a swim in a deep water-filled pit, resulting in the death of five children and hospitalization of two others. The incident occurred in the Raghepura-Yadupatti Chaur area of Benipatti, where soil had been excavated using a JCB machine, leaving behind a large and deep pit filled with water.
The children, aged between 12 and 15 years, were unaware of the pit’s depth when they went to bathe at the site. Several children slipped into deeper sections of the pit and began drowning, leading to a chain of events where others trying to help also got trapped, causing multiple casualties. Local residents rushed to the scene upon hearing the news and initiated rescue efforts.
After the victims were pulled from the water with the help of villagers, they were rushed to Benipatti Sub-Divisional Hospital for treatment. Tragically, two children were declared dead upon arrival, while three others succumbed during treatment. The two surviving children were admitted in critical condition for medical care.
Authorities, including officials from the district administration and police, are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident. The deaths have left the affected families, the village of Kerwar, and the surrounding areas in mourning, with local residents expressing anger over the lack of safety measures at such excavation sites.
