Trinamool Congress Chief and former West Bengal Chief Minister canceled a crucial meeting with party councillors in Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). An intimation about the cancellation was sent to the councillors who were supposed to attend at the party’s state headquarters, Trinamool Bhavan, on the outskirts of Kolkata. The reason for the cancellation was not specified by the councillors.
Mamta Banerjee decided to travel to New Delhi to participate in a meeting of the opposition INDIA bloc on Monday. Her nephew and the Trinamool Congress’ general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, had already departed for New Delhi on Saturday. The canceled meeting with KMC councillors was considered significant following the resignation of Firhad Hakim, the former West Bengal Municipal Affairs & Urban Development Minister and ex-Mayor of the KMC.
The current KMC board is facing a crisis due to the resignations of several elected representatives, including the Mayor. The state government, led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, has issued a notice to the KMC authorities questioning the continuation of the Trinamool Congress-controlled board. Legal complications have arisen over the board’s status, with arguments between KMC Chairperson Mala Roy and the state Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Department.
