On the final day of campaigning for the West Bengal Assembly elections, Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee conducted public meetings in Ranaghat, Goghat, and Arambagh, criticizing the Bharatiya Janata Party on various issues like the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, and the Special Intensive Revision exercise.
During a rally in Ranaghat, Banerjee questioned whether the BJP had fulfilled its promise to grant citizenship to the Matuas, highlighting the lack of progress despite BJP representatives holding positions in the area. He emphasized Trinamool Congress’ commitment to fighting for the Matuas’ citizenship rights and urged voters to support their candidates.
Banerjee criticized the BJP for failing to deliver on its assurance of granting citizenship to the Matuas by December 2019, pointing out that even during the Special Intensive Revision exercise, eligible voters were excluded from the lists. He warned voters about potential monetary inducements by the BJP and urged them to remain vigilant against such tactics.
The Matuas, belonging to the Scheduled Caste Namasudra community, have long sought Indian citizenship after migrating in large numbers during historical events. Banerjee reiterated Trinamool Congress’ dedication to the Matuas’ welfare, contrasting it with what he described as the BJP’s inaction, and promised housing under the Bangla Awas Yojana if their candidates are elected.
