Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee faced severe heckling in Sonarpur, West Bengal, as he went to meet a party worker who was a victim of post-poll violence. Protesters, including women, labeled him a “thief” and physically assaulted him, tearing his shirt and throwing eggs at him. Banerjee, wearing a cricket helmet for protection, criticized the lack of police presence during the attack.
Banerjee, the party’s general secretary, had earlier received a CID notice for interrogation at his Kolkata residence before heading to Sonarpur. Despite the hostile reception, he expressed his determination to seek legal recourse and inform the West Bengal Governor about the incident. This incident occurred less than a month after the new government assumed office in the state.
The MP, who had been homebound since the election results, ventured out for public engagements, visiting another party worker in Beliaghata earlier in the day. Following the CID notice, he proceeded to Sonarpur, where the altercation took place. Banerjee attributed the attack to “Bharatiya Janata Party-backed goons” and questioned the state of democracy in West Bengal amidst the ongoing tensions.
