Trinamool Congress MP Kirti Azad criticized Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, expressing support for the party’s plan to move an impeachment motion against him. Azad alleged that the Election Commission was not operating impartially. He stated that the actions of the Chief Election Commissioner raised concerns about the neutrality of the poll body.
Azad mentioned that the Trinamool Congress delegation faced disrespectful treatment when they visited the Election Commission officials. He highlighted that the delegation, including women members, was spoken to improperly. Azad emphasized that the functioning of the Chief Election Commissioner did not align with constitutional principles.
The Trinamool Congress is reportedly considering the option of initiating an impeachment motion against the Chief Election Commissioner in Parliament. According to the law governing the appointment and functioning of the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners, a special majority is required for the removal of the CEC from office. The controversy surrounding the Election Commission has escalated in recent months, particularly regarding the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
