Trinamool Congress MP, Kalyan Banerjee, faced suspension from the Lok Sabha for the rest of the Monsoon Session following a complaint by the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The NCPI accused Banerjee of using abusive language towards their MPs during House proceedings. The suspension occurred after a heated verbal altercation between Banerjee and some NCPI members inside the Lok Sabha chamber.
The dispute, which involved a female NCPI MP, led to the NCPI lodging a formal complaint with the Lok Sabha Speaker. Despite the incident, the exact cause of the confrontation remains unclear. Subsequently, during the House’s reconvening, Opposition members continued their protest by disrupting proceedings and chanting slogans.
Krishna Prasad Tenneti, presiding over the session, informed members that the House would proceed with its scheduled business as per Speaker Om Birla’s directives. He urged Opposition MPs to return to their seats and allow normal functioning, but the disruptions persisted. In response to the objectionable remarks allegedly made by Banerjee towards a female MP, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju was directed to take appropriate action by the Chair.
Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Arjun Ram Meghwal, then proposed a resolution for Banerjee’s suspension from the Lok Sabha for the remainder of the ongoing Monsoon Session. The resolution was passed through a voice vote, leading to Banerjee’s immediate suspension and eviction from the Parliament premises. Following the suspension proceedings, the Lok Sabha adjourned for the day due to the uproar caused by the Opposition.
