Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha highlighted the need to prevent a recurrence of the Emergency era of 1975, describing it as a dark period in Indian democracy. Speaking at a BJP event in Agartala, he expressed concerns about the fear and uncertainty that prevailed during the Emergency, urging awareness among future generations.
Saha shared personal experiences from the Emergency, recalling the atmosphere of apprehension and restrictions that gripped the nation. He emphasized the significance of understanding the gravity of the Emergency, citing his own encounters during that time, including a stay at Allahabad Railway Station.
The Chief Minister underscored the importance of India’s democratic pillars and condemned the Emergency as a somber chapter in the nation’s history. He mentioned the BJP’s annual observance of June 25 as a day to remember the Emergency and prevent its recurrence, highlighting efforts to educate people about that period.
Saha criticized the Congress government for imposing the Emergency to safeguard political interests, alleging misuse of constitutional provisions. He stressed the need to educate the youth about the Emergency’s impact on democracy, emphasizing the importance of preserving democratic values and learning from past mistakes.
