In an effort to reduce road accidents and fatalities, the Tripura government has introduced stringent road safety measures. These measures include policies like ‘No Helmet, No Petrol’ and ‘No Helmet, No Attendance’. The state has already initiated various actions under the Motor Vehicles Act to address road mishaps and fatalities.

North Tripura and South Tripura districts have already started implementing the ‘No Helmet, No Petrol’ policy. The remaining districts are expected to follow suit soon. In South Tripura, District Magistrate Muhammad Sajad P. has issued a notification enforcing the ‘No Helmet, No Attendance’ policy in all government offices.

The directive mandates that any employee arriving on a two-wheeler without wearing a helmet will be denied attendance registration for the day. The notification also emphasizes penalties for violations under relevant laws. Additionally, police personnel will be stationed at petrol pumps to ensure compliance with the ‘No Helmet, No Petrol’ policy.

To promote road safety and reduce accidents, district administrations and police authorities have launched a road safety awareness campaign. This campaign, titled ‘Safe Helmet, Safe Journey’ and ‘Safe Journey, Safe Life’, aims to educate the public on traffic rules and safe driving practices.

Efforts are being made to achieve zero fatalities by implementing the ‘Zero Fatality Month’ plan. Various stakeholders, including traffic police, transport officials, civil defence volunteers, NGOs, and the public, are collaborating on awareness programs and campaigns. These initiatives focus on promoting traffic discipline and responsible driving behavior.

Chief Minister Manik Saha has directed departments to adopt the ‘Gujarat model of road safety’ to create a safer road network in Tripura. This model emphasizes advanced technology, strict law enforcement, and prompt post-accident rescue with immediate medical care. The Chief Minister stressed the importance of maintaining zero fatalities as the ultimate goal.

To enhance pedestrian safety, authorities are expediting the construction of footpaths and increasing the deployment of CCTV cameras, GPS-based vehicle tracking systems, and speed guns. Director General of Police Anurag reported a decline in total road accident cases and fatalities in recent years. The state is making continuous efforts to further reduce road accidents and ensure road safety.
