With the implementation of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, Tripura is on track to surpass 10 MW in solar power generation by March 2026, as stated by a senior government official. The Managing Director of Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited, Biswajit Basu, highlighted that the state has already achieved a significant milestone by crossing the 6 MW mark in solar power generation, marking a crucial step in the state’s renewable energy journey. Solar energy is now not just a natural resource but is becoming a symbol of progress and self-sufficiency.
Basu expressed confidence that Tripura will exceed the 10 MW solar power generation target by March of the following year. The response to the initiative has been remarkable, with over 17,000 electricity consumers registering for the program across Tripura. Currently, solar panel installations have been completed on the rooftops of 1,762 households, turning these rooftops into mini power stations that collectively generate 6 MW of electricity daily through solar energy harnessing.
The scheme has not only brought light to homes but also created income opportunities for consumers. Participants are not only meeting their own electricity needs but are also earning by selling surplus power back to the state utility. Already, 187 consumers have collectively earned Rs 53,514 by selling excess solar power, with the funds directly credited to their bank accounts. This initiative has transformed solar energy from being just environmentally friendly to a practical source of financial assistance for households.
Shining solar panels on rooftops across Tripura symbolize progress, self-sufficiency, and a commitment to a cleaner environment for future generations. Apart from reducing electricity bills significantly, the project is educating people on how to advance while living in harmony with natural resources. The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is demonstrating that development is not limited to electric infrastructure but also enlightens minds and nurtures dreams of a self-reliant, green, and sustainable future. As the sun brightens the state, it also illuminates the path forward for Tripura.
The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, recognized as the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar initiative, aims to revolutionize India’s energy sector by providing solar power to 1 crore households by March 2027. Launched by the Government of India in February 2024, the initiative targets rooftop solar installations in 1 crore households in the residential sector by FY 2026-27 with an allocated budget of Rs 75,021 crore.
