Trouble arose during the nomination filing by Opposition candidates in Howrah and Kolkata. Left activists were accused of harassing Trinamool supporters, with claims of mistreatment towards women supporters. The police intervened by halting a Left supporters’ procession in front of the Howrah District Magistrate’s office.
A confrontation ensued as the Left supporters chanted derogatory slogans towards Trinamool workers. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and party leader Abhishek Banerjee were reportedly insulted during the incident. The altercation escalated with accusations of Left workers harassing Trinamool supporters, including pushing women supporters away.
Allegations of obstructing the nomination of BJP candidate Papiya Adhikari surfaced in Kolkata’s Alipore area. BJP workers engaged in a heated argument with the police, claiming they were made to wait at Hazra intersection for an hour. The police maintained a strong presence in the Alipore Survey Building area, where tensions rose amid conflicting slogans like “Jai Shri Ram” and “Joy Bangla.”
Papiya Adhikari, the BJP candidate from Tollygunj Assembly constituency, expressed frustration over the police’s actions, accusing them of favoring the Trinamool party. Despite the claims, the police asserted that the movement of workers and supporters was regulated for security purposes, emphasizing that no one was prevented from filing nominations.
Trinamool candidates Debashis Kumar and Shobhandeb Chatterjee successfully filed their nominations at the Alipore Survey Building amidst a heavy police presence. The police actively managed the crowd in front of the building, deploying a significant number of forces to ensure order.
